PALEOCHRISTIAN BASILICA OF AGIOS LEONIDIS - KLAVSI / KARPENISI

The three-aisled basilica of Agios Lenonidis of the 5th century A.D. is a unique monument of paleochristian times in Evrytania, and marks a village where at night the tears of a sad tradition still flow. Small tiles display a rich plant and animal kingdom depicted using a rare mosaic technique (chamokentese), while inscriptions honour members of the local ecclesiastic community and dedicate the church to the Bishop of Athens, Leonidis, a young saint who was martyred in 250 A.D. in Corinth, during the persecution of the Roman emperor Decius.
