HOSIOS LOUKAS

On a slope of Mt Helicon, lush with olive trees, where Demeter Steiritis was once worshipped, the Monastery of Hosios Loukas was constructed, one of the most important middle Byzantine monuments in Greece. The buildings elaborately decorated with mosaics pay tribute to the life of a saint with a vast philanthropic and therapeutic work, who had the gift of prophecy. Currently a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Monument, the monastery, renowned throughout Byzantium for its rich decoration, carries travellers away to a time of forgotten splendour with the scenes that unfold on the walls.
