In western Phthiotis, on the Hellenistic acropolis of ancient Ypati, stands a proud castle that survived sieges by many conquerors over the centuries. It was reinforced during the reign of Justinian in the 6th century A.D. and flourished in the 13th century A.D. under the leadership of John I Angelos Doukas Komninos. The battlements still recount the legend of the beautiful daughter of the Byzantine lord, whom the Pasha successfully stole, while according to folk tradition, the walls of the castle keep alive three spirits that swore to protect the honour of a woman from Patras over the centuries.
