A fragrant stifado invites the faithful every year on the 15th of August on a pilgrimage to Panagia Petriotissa, a church built and decorated in the late 13th century. The icon of the Virgin Mary, which gave the church its name, used to be in Petries, according to tradition. But every night it would disappear and in the morning they would find it in the branches of a tree where the church now stands. They say that the glorious hagiographies were created by painters who came from Constantinople and that there are two that stand out: ‘The Marriage of the Virgin’ and ‘The Betrayal’.
