PROFITIS ILIAS MONASTERY, CHRISSO

At an altitude of 500 metres, between Delphi and Chrisso, there is a monastery with a beautiful wooden iconostasis that depicts events from the Old and New Testaments, and a valuable library with hand-written documents and letters from the Greek Revolution of 1821, telling of the resilience and bravery of its monks, who never hesitated to bravely raise the flag of revolution. A base of Greek fighters until 1825, when it was destroyed by the Ottomans, Profitis Ilias Monastery was rebuilt and burnt down once again during the Nazi Occupation, by the Italians in February 1943, while in 1961 reconstruction began on the church that stands today.
