A river that springs from Mt Oeta and cools the valley of Sperchios, was fated to inscribe its name indelibly into the history of Greece, with the destruction of the bridge there, using explosives, in September 1942. British saboteurs worked with members of the Greek resistance, following the order of the allied command of the Middle East, and successfully disrupted resupplies and the crossing of German forces for six weeks. The demolition of the bridge, which marked one of the greatest acts of sabotage of World War II, remained unforgettable throughout occupied Europe, raising Greek morale.
