DRAGON HOUSES OF KARYSTOS

According to popular tradition, what were once homes of dragons are still standing in Southern Euboea, their piercing gaze staring down any visitors who dare venture near their steep cliffs. Most are in Styra, while the most famous one is on Mt Ochi. Ancient sanctuaries dedicated to the worship of Zeus and Hera, phryctoriae, outposts, and miners’ shelters are some of the theories that have been supported regarding their existence. Rectangular stone buildings with a pyramid roof, no foundations or binder material between the slates, these buildings are impressive, while keeping the secret of their construction and date well hidden.
