ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF EUTRESIS

The area of Eutresis, which extends to the southwest of Thebes, has long been inhabited, since Neolithic times, in fact. It flourished during the early Helladic period and it was fortified during the Mycenaean period. The Thespians settled there in the 6th century B.C., restoring its lost splendour after it was temporarily abandoned in previous years, while in Classical times the sanctuary of Apollo Eutresites guided the footsteps of many pilgrims along its streets. Eutresis was inhabited up until Byzantine times, displaying parts of the wall, a medieval tower, as well as the foundations of a Byzantine church.
