ANCIENT KERINTHOS

Kerinthos, also known as the “ephalos” city, which means the city that has been built on the sea, is mentioned both in the campaign of the Argonauts and in the Trojan war, to which it contributed ships. According to myth it was founded by Cothus, brother of Ion, who asked for the advice of the oracle at Delphi in his search for settling Euboea. The oracle told him that if he wanted to build a city there, he would have to purchase land, as he did, by exchanging new toys, which he gave to the young children he encountered on the beach, for a little soil from their land. Kerinthos has been present since prehistoric times, while it is unknown when it was destroyed.
