ANCIENT ACROPOLIS OF PROERNAS-NEO MONASTIRI, DOMOKOS

Ancient Proerna, in Neo Monastiri, Phthiotis, a Thessalean city between Thavmako and Farsala, according to Strabo, was inhabited from prehistoric times until Roman times. The sanctuary of Demeter Proernia, the goddess of agriculture, indicates the dominant worship of women since the late 6th century B.C., while the city was fortified in the 5th century B.C. when it flourished.
