ACROPOLIS OF ANCIENT AKRAIFIA (AKRAIFNION)

Historians such as Herodotus, Strabo, and Pausanias refer to a city named Akraifeae or Akraifion or Akraifnion, to the east of Copais valley, spread out over Skopia hill. Ancient Akraifia was inhabited from Geometric to Byzantine times, while its walls were constructed consecutively in the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Currently, the ancient construction materials can be found in the walls of the church of Agios Georgios.
