On Friday, 28 January 2022, the DIAZOMA Association had the pleasure of attending the presentation of “Cultural routes through the history of 1821 in Central Greece” by Ms Ioanna Papadopoulou, a student at the University of Patras’ Department of Cultural Heritage Management and New Technology.
Ms Papadopoulou presented her work to DIAZOMA President Mr Stavros Benos and members of DIAZOMA and the D-HUB Incubator.
Ms Ioanna Papadopoulou did her internship at the DIAZOMA Association last summer and joined the Network of DIAZOMA Associate Members. Of the twenty-two cultural tourism products proposed by DIAZOMA or already being implemented in Greece, Ms Papadopoulou elected to study the “Cultural and Environmental Route of Central Greece: “OEDIPUS” and, on the occasion of the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution of 1821, design a themed cultural route along Central Greece’s revolutionary landmarks.
The “Cultural routes through the history of 1821 in Central Greece” revolves around the Greek Revolution of 1821 and aims to produce a cultural tourism product that highlights important moments from the Greek uprising against Ottoman rule in Central Greece. The proposed poles of attraction – journey stops are therefore connected to important events of that period, namely:
Along with these historical events, the Route aims to connect with local gastronomy and the region’s bountiful cultural heritage, thus highlighting the vibrant modern-day local community. The cultural route, accompanied by photographs, descriptions, and other information (maps, links to local websites), reaches out to the public through its website, which can be visited here.
We would also like to thank the following for their contributions to the realisation of this route: Mary Belogianni, Head of DIAZOMA’s educational programme; Christos Chiotis, Visual Communications Designer, and member of D-HUB; Sofia Vakirtzideli, Head of the General State Archives of the Regional Unit of Phthiotis; Ioanna Georgopoulou, archaeologist and Associate Member of DIAZOMA; the Cultural Association of Vagia “Mitros Biniaris”.
