A small rise at the Pyrrha (pyre) location of Mt Oeta bears witness to this day of the worship of a glorious Greek mythological hero. The Doric temple that was built in the 6th century B.C. welcomed believers and their sacrifices to the gods, and recounted the final hours of Heracles on earth: to escape the tremendous pain inflicted by the poisoned chiton (shirt) his wife Deianeira had given him, asked Philoctetes to light a pyre, into which he fell. Clay and metal offerings, spearheads, two bronze statuettes of the 6th or 7th century B.C. depicting a naked Heracles, 13 coins, and three partial inscriptions, indicate that festivals were held in honour of the hero in this specific area.
